How to Host a Zero-Waste Party - Halloween 2025

Halloween can generate lots of waste — think plastic wrappers, disposable décor, synthetic costumes. But with some thoughtful planning, you can throw a fun, sustainable party that leaves very little trash.

Why go zero-waste?

  • Cuts single-use plastic

  • Saves money

  • Educates guests

  • Leaves minimal cleanup

How to do it:

  • Invitations & communicationUse digital invites. Let guests know it’s zero-waste: bring reusable bottles, wear (or DIY) existing costumes, carpool if possible.

  • Tableware & food serviceUse regular dishes or compostable/biodegradable plates, cups, and utensils. Serve snacks from bulk containers in jars. Use cloth napkins. Avoid plastic wrap.

  • Waste managementSet up three bins: compost, recycle, landfill. Use compostable garbage bags. Label bins clearly (with fun Halloween designs).

  • Decorations & lightingChoose natural decor: pumpkins, gourds, fabric banners, mason jars. DIY from cardboard or clothes. Use soy or scented candles, solar or rechargeable lights.

  • CostumesReuse, swap, or DIY. Host a costume swap ahead of time. Use second-hand clothing or materials you already have.

  • Hygiene / cleanupUse biodegradable wipes and reusable towels instead of paper towels. Use sustainable multi-surface wipes. After the party, compost food scraps, wash decor and linens, reuse what you can.

Quick Checklist:

Zero-waste doesn’t mean perfect — it means choosing better, more sustainable options. With some creativity, your Halloween party can be spooky and earth-friendly.
